You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe — but a few thoughtful choices can make your session shine. This quick style guide gives you the top five tips to help your family look amazing without stress.
Neutrals, earth tones, and muted shades photograph beautifully.
Color is welcome — just avoid neons and extra bright shades, which can create harsh skin tones in photos. Jewel tones can look gorgeous for fall or holiday sessions, but they work best when paired with darker neutrals or other rich tones. This keeps the overall look balanced and prevents one outfit from feeling too bold next to softer shades.
Think of your family as coordinated cousins—connected, but not identical. Instead of everyone in the same outfit (or each person in a completely different bold color), aim for a cohesive palette that flows together. A base of neutrals with a few supporting tones works beautifully. To add interest, mix in texture—like knits, lace, or linen—so the look feels layered and natural without being overwhelming.

When everyone feels good in what they’re wearing, it shows. Outfits should allow for snuggles, play, and movement. Choose breathable fabrics and add layers for warmth and flexibility. Avoid anything itchy or restrictive—kids especially will thank you!
For adults, think elevated comfortable: soft sweaters, nice tees, or relaxed button-downs for men (no need for ties or stiff, starchy shirts). For women, flowy dresses are wonderful—they photograph beautifully, add natural movement, and keep you comfortable while chasing little ones. But if dresses aren’t your thing, that’s okay too—tailored pants or a chic jumpsuit can look just as polished and photograph beautifully.
Logos, character graphics, and athletic gear can pull focus away from your family. Too many bold patterns can do the same. Subtle patterns are fine in moderation, especially when balanced with solids and textures.
Shoes matter more than you might think—neutral, simple footwear keeps the focus on your family instead of bright sneakers. Layers like cardigans, sweaters, or jackets not only add warmth but also give photos extra depth and movement. A few small accessories, like a belt or subtle jewelry, can polish the look without taking over.

Yeah, yeah. I know this technically answers the question to clue #3 but you’re going to have to find it somewhere else to get clue #4.
Where do I photograph families?
Congrats on finding the first clue!
