What To Wear For Spring Photos

Once the last snow finally melts, the first buds sprout from the ground, and we all come out of our winter hibernation, you might look around at your family and find that your kids have grown quite a bit over the winter. You might realize they look quite different than the last time you had family photos taken. Kids change so fast, and you will want to have a record of how your children look in this season of life. The fresh new beginning of spring makes a wonderful time for updated family photos!

Once you’ve decided your family will be taking spring photos, you might start to consider what your family should wear. Maybe this is your favorite part of a photo session—or maybe it’s the part you dread the most. Either way, I can help make the wardrobe planning part of your session as fun as possible (or at least as pain-free!).

One of the easiest ways to begin to select outfits is to choose a color palette – or a “vibe” that you will use to make your outfits cohesive. You can choose to plan your wardrobe around a variety of palettes for spring photos. Let’s explore some of them together.

Neutrals

Neutrals are an elegant choice for spring photos. They are seasonless and look beautiful all year round. If updating wall art is one of your photo session goals, choosing neutral tones can ensure your images are timeless and seamlessly blend into your home decor.

Pastels

If neutrals aren’t your thing, pastels are quintessentially spring. They have a soft, airy look that perfectly reflects the spring season.

I recommend choosing a variety of pastel tones to create a coordinated pastel palette instead of choosing one specific color to put everyone in – coordinated outfits tend to photograph better than matchy ones.

Earth Tones

If pastels aren’t really to your taste, you may prefer a more grounded, natural look;  earth tones also look great for spring photos. For the spring season, stick to softer earth tones rather than the deeper, rich hues of fall.

A custom, blended palette

Each family is unique in their style preferences and what they feel comfortable in, so we will create a custom look perfect for your family! Every Holly Ely portrait session includes an optional Zoom wardrobe consultation where I will guide you in choosing outfits that make everyone feel – and look – amazing!
